Bing Integrates Facebook Photo Search

Bing is turning its search engine into a one-stop-shop for your every social need, announcing on Thursday the integration of Facebook friends' photos into your results.

The Microsoft-owned search engine now lets users quickly find any particular picture they're looking for?be it a photo from last summer's family reunion, or a snapshot of the sun setting behind a favorite city skyscraper.

If you don't have a specific image in mind, the new Friends' Photos feature also allows users to simply browse through Facebook friends' collections.

Bing's social sidebar, launched in May, already showcases friends who have posted photos relating to queries. Based on photo title, album description, or caption, this feature theoretically makes it easier to know who to pump for information about an upcoming vacation or the best restaurant to stop at on road trip. And that's not all it's good for for, according to the Bing team.

"With today's release, we are taking this a step further and letting you search and browse your Facebook friends' photos right in Bing," Social Team senior program manager Ian Lin wrote in a blog entry.

By clicking on a photo in the Bing sidebar, users are redirected to a new page where more images are displayed. From there, they can also search for additional pictures, or browse friends' latest shots.

Lin promised that Bing respects all of Facebook's privacy settings, allowing only acknowledged friends to see the photos that you have made viewable, and vice versa. Your photos will never be shared with the public, according to the company.

The social sidebar made its debut just before Microsoft introduced a major revamp of Bing. Last month, the company added the ability for users to tag a friend in a query in a now familiar attempt by search and social firms to extract added information about people using such services.

New flexible electronics technology may lead to new medical uses

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? A Wayne State University researcher has developed technology that opens new possibilities for health care and medical applications of electronic devices.

Yong Xu, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering in the College of Engineering, has developed a simple technology compatible with silicon-on-insulator (SOI) complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) processes for making flexible electronics. "A Silicon-On-Insulator Complementary-Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Compatible Flexible Electronics Technology," published recently in Applied Physics Letters, describes the project, which was part of a National Science Foundation effort.

Flexible electronics have attracted a lot of attention for their enormous potential in many important applications, such as wearable health monitoring devices and medical implants. While a number of approaches to making flexible sensors or electronics have been developed over the last two decades, Xu said those technologies cannot take full advantage of mainstream CMOS processes.

Xu's technology has an advantage over existing methods, such as direct fabrication on flexible substrate and transfer printing, in that it is SOI-CMOS compatible. It fabricates high-performance and high-density CMOS circuits onto SOI wafers, and then uses two layers of Parylene C (a polymer), one of which is perforated, to bond them to flexible substrates.

The lamination of the electronics between those parylene layers offers the additional benefit of protection from environmental moisture. Xu said Parylene C, which creates a flexible skin, already has been used in other medical applications and is well tolerated by human tissue.

His process allows more high-performance electronic devices to be attached to the flexible surface by eliminating the transfer printing step, in which electronics are removed from a harder surface and integrated into a softer one. Additionally, the process allows various sensors and microfluidic devices to be integrated into the flexible substrate.

Xu said his technology could result in retinal prostheses that cause less tissue irritation and therefore work better and longer, as well as more comfortable wearable health monitoring devices. Other possible applications include balloon catheters and stents.

"The ultimate goal is to develop flexible and stretchable systems integrated with electronics, sensors, microfluidics, and power sources, which will have a profound impact on personalized medicine, telemedicine and health care delivery," Xu said.

NASA sees Tropical Storm Bolaven making landfall in North Korea

Tropical Storm Bolaven weakened as it moved north through the cooler waters of the Yellow Sea in the last day, which is good news for North Korea and southeastern China where it is making landfall today, Aug. 28.

On Aug. 27, NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission or TRMM satellite monitored the rainfall rates within Tropical Storm Bolaven. At the time TRMM passed over, Bolaven was still a typhoon. TRMM captured rainfall data at 0917 UTC (about 5:17 p.m. Korea local time/5:17 a.m. EDT) and at 12:33 UTC (8:33 p.m. Korea local time/8:33 a.m. EDT). Bolaven has been generating heavy rainfall and that has been falling over both South and North Korea. Data from TRMM's Microwave Imager (TMI) and Precipitation Radar (PR) instruments showed that numerous rain bands north of Bolaven's center were dropping precipitation at a rate greater than 75 mm/hr (~2.95 inches). That heavy rainfall is cause for concern of flooding as Bolaven makes landfall and moves inland over North Korea and southeastern China.

At 12:55 a.m. EDT (4:55 UTC/12:55 p.m. Korea local time) on Aug. 28, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite captured a high-resolution visible image of Tropical Storm Bolaven centered in the Yellow Sea. Its center of circulation was cloud-free and appeared very large on satellite imagery. Bolaven's cloud cover was extensive and blanketed North and South Korea, southeastern China and southern Japan.

Both the TRMM and the MODIS imagery were created at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The data from both satellites is shared with the forecasters at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center who use it to make their forecasts.

On Aug. 28 at 0900 UTC (5 a.m. EDT/5 p.m. local time, North Korea), Tropical Storm Bolaven had maximum sustained winds near 55 knots (63.2 mph/102 kmh). It was located about 115 nautical miles (132.3 miles/213 km) west of Seoul, South Korea near 38.1 North latitude and 124.9 East longitude. Bolaven was moving to the north-northeastward at 23 knots (26.4 mph/42.6 kmh) and generating very rough waters in the Yellow Sea, with wave heights to 34 feet (10.3 meters).

Forecasters at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) noted that multi-spectral satellite imagery is showing today, Aug. 28, that the low-level circulation center is expanding and deteriorating as stratocumulus clouds surround the system. Wind shear from the south-southeast has been pushing the bulk of clouds and showers to the north and northeast of the center of circulation, over North and South Korea.

The JTWC forecast calls for Bolaven to continue moving to the north-northeast into Northern Korea later on Aug. 28 and become extra-tropical over land in the next day.

ICC U-19 World Cup: India-Pakistan clash for place in semis

A thrilling contest is on the cards on Monday when India and Pakistan clash here at the Tony Ireland Stadium for a place in the semifinal of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

Both India (2000, 2008) and Pakistan (2004, 2006) have won the title twice.

Though India enjoys an overall 9-7 record against Pakistan in U-19 cricket, the green shirts have performed better in bigger matches, having won five of the six contests in the ICC U-19 World Cups.

Pakistan beat India in the semifinal of the 2004 event in Bangladesh, then in the 2006 final in Sri Lanka and overpowered India again in the quarterfinal in New Zealand in 2010.

In the inaugural event in 1988, Pakistan defeated India by 68 runs while India?s only victory in the U-19 World Cup came in 1998 in Durban where it beat Pakistan by five wickets.

In the ongoing event, Pakistan are unbeaten in Group B while in Group C India suffered a shock defeat against the West Indies before it bounced back to win convincingly against Zimbabwe and Papua New Guinea.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam said: ?We played India in the Asia Cup in Malaysia before this tournament and we won one (by one run) while the other game (the final) ended in a tie. There is always a tight contest between us and we are expecting nothing different this time.

?Our players are aware of how exciting this is for the supporters of both the teams. The last time we met the games were exciting, so we hope that continues.

India captain Unmukt Chand, who has scored 104 runs so far, said: ?Pakistan will be a challenge but we have worked hard on our skills coming into the tournament and also on the mental side of our game.

?We played Pakistan twice in Malaysia in June and learnt a lot from those matches. So, we are confident we can perform very well not only in the quarterfinal but also in the rest of the matches.

The winner of the tie will go on to meet the victor of the New Zealand-West Indies match in the second semifinal here Thursday.

Earlier Sunday, England and Bangladesh lost their respective quarterfinals to South Africa and Australia.

Australia and South Africa will play each other in the first semifinal Tuesday.

Iran: Israel's existence 'insult to all humanity'

TEHRAN, Iran?Israel's existence is an "insult to all humanity," Iran's president said Friday in one of his sharpest attacks yet against the Jewish state, as Israel openly debates whether to attack Iran over its nuclear program.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said confronting Israel is an effort to "protect the dignity of all human beings."

"The existence of the Zionist regime is an insult to all humanity," Ahmadinejad said. He was addressing worshippers at Tehran University after nationwide pro-Palestinian rallies, an annual event marking Quds (Jerusalem) Day on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan.

Israel considers Iran an existential threat because of its nuclear and missile programs, support for radical anti-Israel groups on its borders and repeated references by Iranian leaders to Israel's destruction. Ahmadinejad himself has repeatedly made such calls, as has Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran has denied allegations that it is seeking to build nuclear weapons, saying its nuclear program is peaceful and aimed at producing electricity and radioisotopes used to treat cancer patients.

Israel has been carrying on an increasingly public debate about whether to attack Iran's nuclear facilities. Israel's official position is to favor diplomatic and economic measures to persuade Iran to halt its uranium enrichment program, but Israel insists that Iran must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons. Israeli leaders say "all options are on the table," a clear reference to a military strike, if they determine that other measures have failed.

Iran has warned it would hit back at Israel if it is attacked, also threatening to strike at American interests in the region.

Ahmadinejad called Israel "a corrupt, anti-human organized minority group standing up to all divine values."

"Today, confronting the existence of the fabricated Zionist regime is in fact protecting the rights and dignity of all human beings," said Ahmadinejad, with a black and white scarf many Palestinians wear around his neck.

Demonstrators in Tehran set U.S. and Israeli flags on fire and chanted "Death to the U.S." and "Death to Israel" during their pro-Palestinian rally.

In Washington, National Security Council Spokesman Tommy Vietor strongly condemned the Iranian leaders comments.

"If Iranian officials are truly concerned about protecting the rights and dignity of all human beings, then Iran should stop supporting Assad's brutal assault on the Syrian people. Iran and Syria's blatant disregard for basic human rights is the real insult to humanity," Vietor said.

A spokesperson for U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement that Ban also condemned the comments and said leaders in the region should use their voices to "lower, rather than to escalate, tensions."

Iran and Israel have been bitter enemies for decades. Khamenei has called Israel a "cancerous tumor" that must be wiped out.

Tensions between Iran and Israel have intensified since 2005, when Ahmadinejad said in a speech that Israel will one day be "wiped off the map." The Iranian president has also described the Holocaust, when 6 million Jews were killed by German Nazis and their collaborators during World War II, as a "myth."

Norman Landa and Tristan Guilbaud prevail in Round 2 at Sooruz Lacanau Pro

Basque Country?s Norman Landa and France?s Tristan Guilbaud successfully made it through into Round 3 (Round of 96) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 5-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro after managing to clinch the win in their respective Round 2 (Round of 128) heats that went down at the Grande Plage in Lacanau, France, on Tuesday, August 14.

Landa?s fellow countryperson Indar Unanue accompanied him into the next round of the competition after securing runner-up position in the 15^th heat. Great Britain?s Stuart Campbell and France?s Adrien Valero finished in third and fourth place respectively, which resulted in their elimination from the competition.

The 16^th heat saw France?s Rudy Marechal accompany his compatriot Guilbaud to Round 3 after getting his hands on the second-place finish. Reunion Island?s Jorgann Couzinet and Great Britain?s Jayce Robinson found their competition coming to a premature end after rounding out the bottom-two positions.

While the opening day of the competition had started with ideal conditions, the arrival of winds during the afternoon session offered a significant challenge for the surfers as they competed for survival during the second round.

Pitted against Unanue, Campbell and Valero in the 15^th heat, Landa had his work clearly cut out for him. The conditions prevented him and his rivals from making the most of the three-to-four foot waves on offer. By the end of the heat, he had managed to reach a heat-total of 9.43 points after earning a 4.83 and 4.60 off his best-two waves. The effort proved sufficient to earn him top honours and take him through into the next round.

Unanue accompanied his compatriot into the next round after earning a 5.50 and 3.57 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 9.07 points.

Campbell and Valero finished with a heat-total of 7.17 and 5.34 points respectively, which consequently led to their elimination from the competition.

The final heat of Round 2 turned out to be yet another low-scoring affair with all four surfers struggling to hold their own in demanding conditions.

Guilbaud managed to eventually walk away with the win by scoring a mere 3.17 and 4.20 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 7.37 points.

Marechal collected a couple of scores in the three-point range to finish with a heat-total of 7.04 points, securing runner-up place and consequently advancing to the next round.

Couzinet and Robinson found their competition come to a premature end after finishing with a heat-total of 7.00 and 5.56 points respectively.

Do you Think Staying Healthy is Expensive ? What are Alternatives

Reading a post on Facebook today took me back a few years in time. The comment made was ?Why do they have to make everything so expensive. With a growing family we can?t afford it?. What was this person talking about?

?

She was talking about alternatives to disease care. Her focus is where I used to be too. As the daughter of a mill worker who was raised having medical insurance I understand right where she is. When I got married to a mill worker our family used the many benefits of health insurance, too. It would be years before I learned some interesting facts surrounding the reality of the security fa?ade we call insurance.

?

In today?s world we are being lead to the slaughter and I mean that literally as well as figuratively. Governments are fueled by power and money. A very wealthy and powerful entity is insurance companies.

?

Likewise we are lead by government officials and programs promising to take care of its citizens. Programs provide for the underprivileged, the poor and the unfortunate misplaced workers and their families thus encouraging the massive numbers to cast their vote and so the cycle continues.

?

This is not a political statement. I am not taking of sides. What I am about to share is the wake up call I received some 15 years ago. Let me share with you part of my story, how I learned that not all is as it may appear.

?

How I got to where I was?

?

As a working woman, wife, and mom?juggling a couple of businesses with a growing family is not rocket science. Stress seems to come prepackaged and readily accepted as the norm. No worries, it can be managed, right?

?

My work ethic started developing when I was young and continues to this day. Not sure if it?s my personality or if it?s in my genes. All I do know is that I love to work not leaving my hands idle for too long.

?

Work was not a four letter word, it was something I enjoyed.

?

My professional background revolved around serving others. As I climbed the corporate ladder, got married and had children my focus remained on work. Now don?t go getting all willy-nilly on me?I know that wasn?t right, it just was where I was at that time in my life.

?

I soon found I was not really the stay at home kind of girl, so continuing the corporate climb seemed the right thing to do. However, that ladder was soon to be pulled from under me and the financial crash was imminent. The only option at the time seemed to add another job to my existing one to make ends meet.

?

The juggling act began and I did well with it for awhile. However, all good things come to an end, and end they did when my health came crashing down around my head. The world as I knew it was coming to an end and I was not quite sure how to deal with it.

?

Now the lesson to learn was how to deal with all of the stress piled upon me.

?

Managing the household, the kid?s schedules (both of them) taking care of my husband and my work schedule too was proving to be a monumental job. As the stress mounted I dealt with it the best I could. What I did not realize was that stress was silently creeping in like the fog in a marsh.

?

Then one day it hit with a vengeance. My body shut down, migraine headaches were a common occurrence. My immune system crashed, chronic illness was as common as the daily mail.

?

The doctors warned me that I needed to slow down. But I refused to give in knowing that my family depended on me. Then it happened. The body gave way and I found myself in the hospital facing surgery.

?

The stress had won the battle!

?

One day while lying in the bed, recuperating from surgery, I had nothing but time?time to think and rethink how my life had turned out and where it was headed.

I was suffering from a lot of issues affecting my health, such as, allergies, asthma, migraines, no energy, bad back/neck issues, and being overweight, not to mention female issues (PMS and menopause). I had hit the proverbial rock bottom in my health.

?

Did I mention that I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue and the dentist found gum disease, too??I was also stressed out of my mind due to my husband losing his job. I had tried for 5 years working with my doctors and it seemed that I only got worse instead of better.? All medications that I tried failed. I even decided to try vitamins and herbal supplements, my grandma?s suggestion, but didn?t get the lasting results I was looking for either.

?

Looking back on the system we thought had helped

?

Over the years of our marriage I often took insurance for granted. After all it was a benefit enjoyed by most mill worker?s families. With ever increasing co-payments, deductibles and share of cost premiums we started to look at our personal usage and the benefits the insurance company was paying for us.

?

I?ll admit there were times when we were thankful for those benefits; like the time I had emergency gall bladder surgery, or my herniated disc surgery. Those were very costly surgeries and there were no savings to pay for them.

?

However, when we looked at the last ten years of our marriage, our renewed health and lifestyle we found we were not receiving benefits worthy of the hefty share of cost and deductibles we were paying. Hubby only had one prescription for high blood pressure and that share of cost was $40 per month. Add in the premium we paid semi-monthly of $65 it was pretty costly medicine.

?

It wasn?t until he lost his job and insurance coverage that we found the truth. These astonishing facts still boggle my mind to this day. The pharmacy we purchase the blood pressure medication from had a program for uninsured customers. That same medication now cost us a whopping $4 per month?yes, you read that right.

?

So, my question for pondering today is this?for 40 plus years we paid $65 per pay period (twice per month), plus a co-pay of $40 per prescription for the medication we now paid $4 per month with no co-pay or premium?WHERE DID ALL THAT MONEY GO?

?

As for the person who posted on Facebook ?Why do they have to make everything so expensive. With a growing family we can?t afford it?. I don?t know; maybe ask the drug companies or the pharmacies.

?

What I do know, what makes sense to me and what I am truly grateful for is to be off the roller coaster ride of craziness created by high doctor and prescription costs combined with enormous insurance rates and discovered that for $40 per month I can protect my genes every single minute of every single day. It?s been years since I?ve visited a doctor. We are healthy, live vibrant lives full of deep sleep, youthful skin and endurance. Seems to me it?s very inexpensive compared to the alternative.
