Snigdha Nandipati wins National Spelling Bee

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) ? Snigdha Nandipati heard a few words she didn't know during the National Spelling Bee, but never when she stepped to the microphone.

Calm and collected throughout, the 14-year-old from San Diego spelled "guetapens," a French-derived word that means ambush, snare or trap, to win the 85th Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night. She beat out eight other finalists in the nerve-wracking, brain-busting competition.

After she spelled the word, she looked from side to side, as if unsure her accomplishment was real, and, oddly, she was not immediately announced as the winner. Applause built slowly, and a few pieces of confetti trickled out before showering her. Then her 10-year-old brother ran on stage and embraced her, and she beamed.

"I knew it. I'd seen it before," Nandipati said of the winning word. "I just wanted to ask everything I could before I started spelling."

A coin collector and Sherlock Holmes fan, Nandipati aspires to become a physician or neurosurgeon. She also plays violin and is fluent in Telugu, a language spoken in southeastern India.

A semifinalist last year, Nandipati became the fifth consecutive Indian-American winner and 10th in the last 14 years, a run that began in 1999 when Nupur Lala won and was later featured in the documentary "Spellbound."

Wearing a white polo shirt with a gold necklace peeking out of the collar, the bespectacled, braces-wearing teen never showed much emotion while spelling, working her way meticulously through each word. Only a few of the words given to other spellers were unfamiliar to her, she said.

Her brother and parents joined her onstage after the victory, along with her maternal grandparents, who traveled from Hyderabad, India, to watch her. At one point as she held the trophy aloft, her brother, Sujan, pushed the corners of her mouth apart to broaden her smile.

Her father, Krishnarao, said Snigdha first showed an interest in spelling as early as age 4. As she rode in the car, he would call out the words he saw on billboards and she would spell them.

In the run-up to the bee, Nandipanti studied 6 to 10 hours a day on weekdays and 10-12 hours on weekends ? a regimen that she'll need to maintain to get through medical school, her father said.

"She says this is harder than being a neurosurgeon ? maybe," said her mother, Madhavi.

Stuti Mishra of West Melbourne, Fla., finished second after misspelling "schwarmerei" ? which means excessive, unbridled enthusiasm. While many spellers pretend to write words with their fingers, the 14-year-old Mishra had an unusual routine ? she mimed typing them on a keyboard. Nandipanti and Mishra frequently high-fived each other after spelling words correctly during the marathon competition.

Coming in third for the second consecutive year was Arvind Mahankali of Bayside Hills, N.Y. At 12, the seventh-grader was the youngest of the nine finalists. He has one more year of eligibility remaining, and he pledged to return.

"I got eliminated both times by German words," Mahankali said. "I know what I have to study."

Nandipati's prize haul includes $30,000 in cash, a trophy, a $2,500 savings bond, a $5,000 scholarship, $2,600 in reference works from the Encyclopedia Britannica and an online language course.

The week began with 278 spellers, including the youngest in the history of the competition ? 6-year-old Lori Anne Madison of Lake Ridge, Va. The field was cut to 50 semifinalists after a computer test and two preliminary rounds, and Lori Anne was two misspelled words away from a semifinal berth. The tiny, blue-eyed prodigy said she'd be back next year.

The highest-placing international speller was Gifton Wright of Spanish Town, Jamaica, who tied for fourth. This week, Scripps announced tentative plans for a world spelling bee with teams of spellers from dozens of countries. Once that gets off the ground, the National Spelling Bee would be closed to international participants.

Also tied for fourth were Nicholas Rushlow of Pickerington, Ohio, and Lena Greenberg of Philadelphia. The excitable Greenberg, a crowd favorite who ran delightedly back to her chair after each correct word, pressed her hands to her face and exclaimed, "Oh! Oh!" when she was eliminated.

Rushlow was making his fifth and final appearance in the bee, and this was his best showing. He got three words he didn't know ? one in the semifinals and two in the finals ? and managed to spell two of them correctly before the third one, "vetiver," tripped him up.

While he was satisfied with his performance, he's sad that his run is over.

"I'm a has-been now," Rushlow said.

'Angry Birds' debit cards to be issued in Russia

2 hrs.

Russian fans of the game "Angry Birds"?will soon be able to get special debit cards ? or "Angry Cards" ? giving them discounts on the game's products.?

Moscow-based Promsvyazbank said Tuesday it will start issuing the new MasterCards on June 4. They will be printed with images of the various characters and will give users a 10 percent discount on all Angry Birds-branded products.

Besides debit cards, the bank will also issue Angry Bird cash cards, which users top up with money. The bank will pay a 4 percent annual interest rate on the card's balance.

The maker of "Angry Birds," Rovio Entertainment, has already launched toys and baby clothes lines featuring "Angry Birds" characters. But the Russian debit card is going to be the first "Angry Birds"-branded financial product. The game has been downloaded more than 10 million times in Russia.

Ivan Pyatkov, director for retail sales and technology at Promsvyazbank, told the Associated Press that the bank is planning an initial printing of 50,000 cards but hopes to issue twice as much by the end of the year.

The bank expects the card to help attract urbanites between 25 and 35 years of age with a monthly income of at least $1,000.

Pyatkov said the bank is receiving a large number of requests for Angry Birds cards following early reports in the Russian press.

"Some clients are demanding their Angry Birds cards right now ? before the official launch," Pyatkov said.

Promsvyazbank will be launching the card in partnership with Internet Retail Solutions, Rovio's agent in Russia.

Promsvyazbank, ranked as Russia's 11th largest by the Interfax research center, is 74 percent-owned by two Russian tycoons, the Ananyev brothers. Commerzbank holds 14 percent in the lender via a subsidiary while the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has a 12 percent stake.?

(Santa Barbara, Calif.) Imagine being able to mathematically describe the process by which an embryo develops into an animal, assigning numbers to its every function, and dysfunction. Such capability holds enormous implications for medicine, pointing to the potential for determining when and where things go developmentally awry and paving the way to possible solutions.

This sort of breakthrough is one of the long-term goals of theoretical physicists and experimental biologists at UC Santa Barbara, where the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP) is uniting researchers from the disparate disciplines in joint study. Two new grants, together totaling $2 million, are giving those interdisciplinary efforts a big boost.

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has awarded KITP $1.6 million for its ongoing interdisciplinary biology initiatives, including workshops, postdoctoral fellowships, and plans for a new summer program the Santa Barbara Advanced School for Quantitative Biology (SBASQB) aimed squarely at the interface of physics and biology. A $400,000 grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund will go exclusively toward the latter endeavor.

"We are profoundly grateful for the extraordinary gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, whose steadfast support of scientific research and the pursuit of knowledge in emerging fields is of vital importance. Their grant to KITP will be a tremendous boon to the institute's work at the interface of physics and biology," said UCSB Chancellor Henry T. Yang. "The remarkable generosity of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund provides another lasting benefit by helping to launch the Santa Barbara Advanced School for Quantitative Biology, an innovative, interdisciplinary new course with the potential for groundbreaking scientific discoveries."

Set to welcome its first class in 2013, SBASQB aspires to advance both physics and biology by unifying their practitioners in intensive summer study. Side-by-side in lectures and in the lab, researchers will explore subjects such as morphogenesis, embryology, microbial biology, and evolution. The new program is the brainchild of physics professor and permanent KITP member Boris Shraiman, and Joel Rothman, chair of UCSB's Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology.

"We thank the Moore Foundation for their generosity and their vision in supporting a broader range of activities at the KITP, and we are delighted that, with our proposed course, we were able to rise to the challenge set by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund," Shraiman said.

"It really has been a dream to set up a course like SBASQB," Shraiman added. "It is a merger of two cultures drawing on the lab course tradition in biology and the workshop tradition in theoretical physics and it is going to be a rather unique combination of the two."

Describing SBASQB as the culmination of their shared vision to bring together theorists and experimentalists in an active lab setting, Shraiman and Rothman said the venture was largely inspired by the storied research program at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass., which boasts more than 50 Nobel laureates among its past participants.

What sets such courses apart, said Rothman who likes to think of SBASQB as a sort of "Woods Hole West" is the way they turn scientific convention on its head. The elite, intensive program will, on occasion, see graduate students and postdoctoral students serving as instructors to faculty; theorists engaging in lab work; experimentalists participating in theory-focused lectures; and instructors and students collaborating on experiments. Differentiating SBASQB from Woods Hole: the former will be built on the foundation of the KITP, grounded in the physical science community.

"There is a lot of exciting stuff going on at the interface of traditional, hard physical sciences and biology that I think will engender what really will be a new discipline," said Rothman, who served as Woods Hole summer faculty for 18 years, spending five years as course director. "A new generation of scientists who've had strong training in both realms will ultimately be creating the new departments of quantitative biology."

In fact, a quantitative approach may be essential to scientists as they seek to truly understand, and definitively explain, the most intricate biological problems and processes such as the inner workings of an embryo.

"Biologists like myself have become very good at collecting data, but we're only fair at making sense of that data," Rothman said. "We're missing a major instrument, and that is the math. Math is the language and the tool that really allows you to get insights."

Shraiman concurred, noting, "It won't be a simple 'equation,' but understanding how to encode something as complex as, say, the shape of a limb in DNA is a challenge that will require new tools quantitative tools yet it's not that far off. It's not something we can do today, but it's a safe bet that some of the graduates of our new course will be able to do it in 10 or 15 years."

Dewey LeBoeuf | Bankruptcy Filing | Law Firms - The Real Deal

Dewey & LeBoeuf filed for bankruptcy yesterday, the New York Times reported, more than two months after reports first emerged that the huge law firm, with one of the largest real estate practices in the city, faced financial distress. Filed in federal bankruptcy court in Manhattan, the bankruptcy calls for the firm to keep 90 employees on staff to assist in the liquidation of the business. At its peak, the firm employed more than 2,500 people in 26 global offices. The firm has $315 million in liabilities, $225 million of which is owed to banks.

The filing winds down a tumultuous year for the firm, that has seen a mass exodus of its top legal talent ? including Stuart Saft, the firm?s former global head of real estate ? as it became clearer they wouldn?t be paid millions of dollars of compensation they were owed.

The struggles of the firm have been traced to the merger between Dewey Ballantine and LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MaCrae in 2007 and the subsequent financial crisis.

?Because the partnership lacks any shared cultural values or history, money becomes the core value holding the firm together,? said William Henderson, a law professor at Indiana University who studies law firms. ?Money is weak glue.?

Legal experts quoted by the Times said the downfall of such an influential firm is ?unprecedented.? [NYT]

Mac Miller Helps Rookie MC Battle Cancer On The Mic

'There's a kid battling one of the toughest diseases in the world, yet he's courageous enough to talk about it in his music,' Miller tells MTV News of Yung Ka.
By Rob Markman

At the open of his 2010 track "The Spins," Mac Miller urges kids to follow their dreams, but the Pittsburgh MC does more than just give sound advice. Recently the Blue Slide Park rapper and his producer E. Dan linked up with aspiring MC Bobby Stewart, a.k.a. Yung Ka, to show him the ropes around the studio.

Stewart, who is suffering from a form of cancer called T-cell lymphoma, first met Miller at Mac's December 2011 homecoming concert in Pittsburgh after the rapper presented the Make-A-Wish Foundation with a check for $50,000.

"It's cool what I did, but the story here is him; the story is that there's a kid that's battling one of the gruesomest, toughest diseases in the world, yet he's courageous enough to talk about it in his music," Mac told MTV News when we caught up with him at the Bamboozle Music Festival in New Jersey on May 18. "This is someone who really talks about his sh-- in his music, like all the stages of cancer, to the point where it's uncomfortable for some to listen to because it's that much real, it's too real, it's that painful."

Miller served as a mentor for the 18-year-old rapper, but he didn't want to muddle the moment by guest-rapping on Ka's personal track. "I just wanted to do what I could do to mentor him and help him put a song together and give him what I know," he said. "I didn't want to step in on the song because to be real, he did a whole song about cancer, and then what am I gonna come in with on the third verse?"

The song hasn't been released yet, but last week Pittsburgh's WTAE Action News paid a visit to ID Labs, the studio where Mac, E. Dan and Ka recorded the track, and caught up with the up-and-coming MC.

"To be with Mac is a blessing," Ka said. "His lyrics are amazing. Hip-hop is my passion. To be able to be with Mac Miller ... he is a Pittsburgh legend. Wiz Khalifa shout-out."

Homes with a Past: Church, Schoolhouse and Silo ? Tribune

Syndicated ? Get out your Ouija boards and crystal balls. That?s what it might take to solve the double past lives of these unique homes.

On the outside, they all have the appearance of single-family homes. But upon closer investigation, it?s pretty clear these interesting structures were originally designed for different purposes, and were home to other sorts of tenants ? like school kids, congregants and even missiles!

Don?t believe us? Step inside!

Missile Silo Home

127 Standish Rd, Saranac NY (below)

For sale: $750,000

Want the ultimate conversation piece? How about living in a home on the Saranac real estate market that was once secure enough to hold a missile (above). Although there is a small, ?decoy? home above ground, the main living areas lie 35 feet underground in a nuclear- and earthquake-proof space. Once the missile command center, the area has been transformed into a comfortable space with 4 bedrooms, kitchen, and living room. The home also includes an 180-foot deep silo space that once held the U.S. military?s Atlas missile.

Former Firehouse

117 Broad St, San Francisco CA

Recently sold: $875,000

Like the painted lady row houses in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco, here?s a home that is a different kind of painted lady. Built in 1896, this San Francisco home (above) was formerly a neighborhood fire station, painted with a bright red door and trim. Clues to its past still remain inside the 2-bedroom, 4,000-square-foot-home today ? including a fireman?s pole. The home sold for $875,000 in December 2010.

Schoolhouse Rock

1381 Knopp School Road, Fredericksburg, TX

For sale: $2.3 million

This stunning property in Fredericksburg, TX (above) gives little hint to its historic past as a schoolhouse and teacher?s residence. The 4,870-square-foot limestone home has been generously expanded and features an open floor plan with high ceilings and enormous glass sliding doors that lead to patios and the rectilinear pool.

Guest Caboose

1756 Defoor Ave NW, Atlanta GA

For sale: $395,000

A classic bungalow in Atlanta is attractive enough on its own, but it comes with the added bonus of an unusual guest house that is a cozy as, well, a caboose! Painted and completely renovated, the caboose guest house has a kitchenette, small living area and nook-sized bedroom.

Modern Wares

1121 Delano St, Houston TX

Currently off the market

The steel, concrete and pipes of a warehouse (above) were transformed into chic accents for this modern home on the Houston real estate market. Built as a warehouse in the 1960s, the home has been customized into a 4,704-square-foot living space with high ceilings and large windows.

Barn-livin?

10 Albert Ave, Barrington RI

For sale: $339,000

No need to make room for farm animals in this barn. The Barrington, RI home (above) was once a Civil War-era barn and much of that character was retained in the renovation. Built in 1865, the barn was converted to a ?sunlight? 3-bedroom home in 1996.

Former Storefront

2116 N Leavitt St, Chicago IL

For sale: $895,000

This storefront Chicago property (above) was home to several different kinds of shops over the years, but it has settled into its latest incarnation as a single-family home. The attractive conversion can?t hide its past, though, which is nice given its dramatic 20-foot-ceilings, ?restaurant-grade? kitchen and roof-top terrace.

Forest Ranger Station

22707 Covey Ln, Rathdrum ID

For sale: $359,000

Not only is this cabin nearly 100 years old, it was also once a forest ranger station serving the Sawtooth Wilderness, declared by the U.S. government to have ?the clearest air in the continental United States.? The converted 3-bedroom home sits on a third of an acre and includes beach access to the Twin Lakes.

Unique Church

2007 NW 61st St, Seattle WA

Pending sale: $789,000

When it was first constructed in 1907, this church served as a religious gathering place for decades ? that is, until a couple of artists bought it and decided to transform the Seattle property into a home that showcases their art and whimsical collections. The details include a tricycle wall, a giant swing in the former sanctuary and a baptismal font-turned-bathroom. (See more about the Ballard Big House).

Factory Flair

26 Stillman St Apt 2-1, Boston MA

For sale: $649,000

Many East Coasters have taken advantage of the brick and stone warehouses left over from an industrial age long gone, turning them into luxury condos and apartments. This condo for sale in Boston (above) is located in a former furniture factory and warehouse. The 2-bedroom, 1.5-bath condo has 12-foot high ceilings, recessed lighting and an updated kitchen with gas range and granite countertops.

Report: Vote for your favorite all-female Ford Mustang showcar for SEMA

Voting Now Open to Determine Final Design of First-Ever SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women

DEARBORN, Mich., May 24, 2012 ? Voting is now open to help select the final concept for the first-ever SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women. To vote now through June 3, the public is invited to visit: http://www.hotrod.com/all-female-mustang-build-ford-sweepstakes/ to view three different design concepts and vote on the one they would like to see used for the build. Voters will be entered into drawings to win several prizes.

Announced earlier this week, the SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women is a collaboration between Ford Motor Company and the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). Led by the SEMA Businesswomen's Network (SBN), a 2013 Mustang GT donated by Ford will be completely modified using the winning design from start to finish by women.

Beginning with three concepts developed by women designers and concluding with women volunteers performing the hands-on modifications, the project is meant to shine light on women working in the automotive aftermarket and to encourage more women to pursue careers in the industry.

The three concepts are:

High Gear: Designed by SBN Member, Jennifer Seely of Ford Motor Company, High Gear ? a luxury Mustang concept ? is inspired by international products in categories such as jewelry, couture clothing and architecture. Designed to stimulate the senses by fusing luxury and power, the results are fresh and exciting, propelling Mustang into a whole new arena

Chromatic: Designed by SBN Member, Jennifer Seely of Ford Motor Company, the ultimate pop culture edition Mustang takes a futuristic design approach drawing inspiration from such pop culture elements as street art and products for an exciting color palette that is free of all boundaries and disciplines. The anthracite-colored chrome body as a base exemplifies the neon colors bringing this Mustang to life. Design details include anthracite-colored chrome exterior, bright cyan wheels and white leather racing interior coupled with an aggressive track suspension and V8 roar

Fast Metal: Designed by SBN Member, Theresa Contreras from L&G Enterprises. Theresa takes the American muscle car to a whole other level using tone-on-tone dark metallic finishes and red accents for a dramatic design that underscores Mustang's DNA, raw speed and power

Source Interlink Media (SIM), a partner in the project, posted the three concepts on several of its websites so the public can vote for the design that will ultimately be selected. The concept with the most votes will be used for the build, which will take place at SIM headquarters in El Segundo, Calif.

"Women play a significant role when it comes to customizing a vehicle," said Bryan Harrison, senior manager of councils for SEMA and project manager on the build. "From purchasing the vehicle and determining what modifications to make, to executing the actual modifications and driving the customized vehicle, women are key players in the entire process. The SEMA Mustang Build demonstrates just how integral women are to customizing today's cars and trucks."

The completed vehicle will debut at the 2012 SEMA show in Las Vegas. The modified Mustang will then be auctioned off on eBay, with money raised to benefit the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund is dedicated to fostering the next generation of automotive aftermarket leaders and innovators by awarding cash scholarships to winning applicants.

(AP) ? Moments after sending the New Jersey Devils to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since 2003, Adam Henrique skated to the corner and waited to be mobbed by his teammates.

It's become a common occurrence for the 22-year-old who spent last season in the minor leagues. He notched the series winner in double overtime against Florida in Game 7 in the opening round, and did it again on Friday night in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals, sending the rival New York Rangers packing for the season along the way.

And, oh, how sweet it was for the Devils.

The memory of missing the playoffs last season and the ghost of an 18-year-old wound were wiped out with a sweep of this rolling rookie's stick.

Henrique scored off a wild scramble in front at 1:03 into overtime and the Devils eliminated the Rangers 3-2 to advance to the Cup finals against the Los Angeles Kings.

"I mean, this kid's just at the right place, right time, all the time," Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. "The two biggest goals of the playoffs come off his stick.

"And that's not accidental."

Both goals have been followed by scrums in which teammates surround Henrique and pound on him to celebrate. It's fun, of course, but Henrique is more focused on facing the Kings in a series that will start in New Jersey on Wednesday.

"There's still more things to accomplish," said Henrique, who is a finalist for the Calder Trophy, given to the NHL's top rookie.

"Try to take in as much as I can this whole year. And obviously those are two huge goals, and then probably two of the biggest goals I ever scored. There's still more ahead. We're not done yet. We haven't really won anything. It's a long ride.

"Every kid dreams of playing in the Stanley Cup final. And we have a chance to win. I'm excited, and ready to get started."

After beating Florida, Philadelphia and their biggest rivals, the Rangers, only the Kings stand in the way of a fourth Cup for New Jersey.

"It feels great to get to where we are," Devils captain Zach Parise said. "As Adam said, we still have a lot of work ahead of us. But we've put ourselves in a pretty good position right now, and we've got a chance.

"We'll see what we can do."

This series win came against the Devils' most intense rival, and it was that much more enjoyable ? even to those who haven't been around the feud all that long.

"That one was like Christmas," Henrique said.

It also was needed. The Devils, after all, blew a 2-0, first-period lead and didn't want to head back to New York for a Game 7 on Sunday.

"It didn't matter how it got to overtime, we were in a good position," Parise said. "We were at home. We just needed one shot."

Actually, the Devils needed a few shots to win the game.

Henrique's winner came after Henrik Lundqvist stopped Ilya Kovalchuk twice and Alexei Ponikarovsky. The last shot was in the crease and Henrique tapped it home.

"We caught them on a line change and their defensemen were tired," said DeBoer, who was fired by Florida after missing the playoffs in his three seasons with the Panthers.

"We found a way to jam one in. That's the only way you're going to score on Lundqvist. You're not going to get a clean one. You're going to have to work for it around the net.

"And that's what we did."

Ryan Carter and Kovalchuk also scored for the Devils, whose biggest move this year was hiring DeBoer. He has more than proved his coaching ability.

Ruslan Fedotenko and Ryan Callahan tallied for top-seeded New York, which had a good flurry just before New Jersey scored to end it.

The six Rangers on the ice just stayed down in disbelief and frustration. This was very much like Game 5, which the Devils won 5-3. New York carried the play after the first period and had a 35-29 edge in shots.

But when it came time for a game-deciding play to be made, it was a Devil who made it.

"When they scored, it was such an empty feeling," said Lundqvist, who said the puck took a weird bounce on the final play. "It is shocking."

Henrique overcame injury to score this one. He seemed to take a stick from Brian Boyle in the groin area late in the third and had to leave the ice.

He felt no pain after the game winner.

All the Rangers could do was bow their heads and then line up for the traditional handshake after losing to their cross-rival rivals in a series that was close.

"That's playoff hockey, and that's usually where you get an overtime goal," New York's Brandon Prust said. "Just whacking away in front of the net, getting rebounds."

The ageless Martin Brodeur, 40, kept the Devils alive in the third. He stopped a power-play shot by Brad Richards, made a save on Artem Anisimov between the circles and used his stick to deflect a pass from the boards by Carl Hagelin in the final minute just before it got to Marian Gaborik on the edge of the crease.

"There's a reason why he's the best goalie to play the game," Henrique said. "He gives us that extra confidence every night when we got him back there. He's going to give us the chance to win no matter what, even if we're not playing our best. He seems to make those big saves night in, night out, and he did it again tonight."

Lundqvist's best stop in the third was on Dainius Zubrus on a shot from behind the circles.

Facing elimination and down 2-0 after 20 minutes, the Rangers found their game in the second period and tied it at 2-all on goals by Fedotenko and Callahan in a roughly four-minute span.

Carter, who scored the game winner in New York on Wednesday after the Devils blew a 3-0 lead, put New Jersey ahead again at 10:05 of the opening period on a rebound. Kovalchuk added his seventh goal of the postseason on a power play, his fifth with the extra man.

The Devils ? as is the tradition for many Cup finalists ? did not touch the Prince of Wales Trophy that was presented at center ice. As the team skated off to their locker room, "Glory Days," the 1984 hit from New Jersey rocker Bruce Springsteen serenaded them.

The game was played on the 18-year anniversary of the Rangers' dramatic 4-2 Game 6 victory over New Jersey at the Meadowlands, a win that pushed that classic Eastern Conference final series to a Game 7 and eventually led New York to its first Stanley Cup in 54 years. That game, of course, was preceded by a guarantee from Rangers captain Mark Messier, who delivered three goals en route to the victory.

This time, though, there will be no Game 7.

NOTES: The Rangers became the fifth team to play 20 postseason games without reaching the finals. ... TV personality Donald Trump was at the game. ... Devils C Travis Zajac left the ice briefly in the second after being slashed on the left hand by Prust. No penalty was called. ... New Jersey is 4-1 in overtime in the postseason. New York finished 2-3 after regulation. ... This is only the second time the Devils have defeated the Rangers in the postseason in six tries. ... The last time New Jersey played in the Stanley Cup finals, the Devils also played a California team: the Anaheim Ducks in 2003.

Blue Hill Memorial Hospital's 5K Fun Run training program set for ...

Opening day for Blue Hill Memorial Hospital?s 5K Fun Run training program is Saturday, June 2. This innovative, flexible and highly personalized set of fitness activities is available to community members at no cost.

With the approval of their primary care provider, individuals at all fitness levels can participate, and many features of the program are available year-round.

?Our goal is to give as many people as possible a comfortable, manageable and supportive way to move toward better health and fitness,? said physical therapist and fitness trainer Anne Piazza, who volunteers to lead the program. ?We are heading into our fifth year, and have worked hard to develop a program that truly has changed lives. Whether someone is new to exercise or a seasoned athlete, we can help each participant set and meet their goals.?

This year?s program will consist of 5K training for all levels, regardless of whether an individual wants to walk, jog, or run the distance.

?I assign participants to a beginner, intermediate or advanced group and develop personalized training programs,? Piazza said. ?Everyone has different goals and desires when it comes to health and fitness. I hope to be able to support each individual to overcome any obstacles in achieving their goals.?

There will be regular boot camps, four times a week, to help participants build strength and improve coordination while rounding out their overall fitness.

?Boot camps are a fun way to get strong, build confidence and burn calories. Participants have fun and get a good workout at the same time,? she said. ?Please don?t spend another year on the couch wishing you could participate more in life. We are not judgmental. Take that first step. Come to one of our Saturday morning sessions or after work boot camps and let us help you on your way towards a healthier life.?

According to Piazza, varied fitness activities are an essential way to ensure that individuals stay engaged in regular exercise. Last year, for example, she held a minitriathlon. This year, she again is scheduling bike rides and swims in the area. Piazza is also familiar with other wellness opportunities in the area, such as classes at the new fitness center at Tradewinds and local hiking groups.

The 2012 Fun Run is scheduled for the morning of Saturday, Aug. 4. Participants should get permission from their physician before starting this or any exercise program. Those with questions or interest in joining this year?s training program can email Anne Piazza at agpiazza@live.com or call 266-4338.
