U.S. soldier, civilian, killed in Afghan "insider" attack

KABUL (Reuters) - Two Americans were killed in the latest attack by a member of the Afghan security forces, as U.S. military deaths reached or neared 2,000 since the start of the war in Afghanistan in 2001.

A U.S. official, who asked not to be identified, confirmed on Sunday that an American soldier and a civilian contractor were killed in Saturday's attack in eastern Afghanistan.

It was the latest setback after the United States said joint operations with Afghan forces were returning to normal.

Joint operations were halted two weeks ago after a surge of attacks on the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) by its Afghan allies. At least 52 ISAF service members have been killed this year in "green-on-blue" attacks.

Pentagon data on a Defense Department website put total U.S. deaths in the Afghanistan war at or close to 2,000 since combat began 11 years ago.

It was too early to say what impact the latest incident would have on plans to restore joint operations with Afghan troops to normal, a spokesman for ISAF said.

The attack took place in the Sayed Abad district of the Wardak province, according to local police sources, who said a gun battle broke out between coalition soldiers and Afghans when an Afghan National Army member opened fire on American troops.

Three members of the Afghan National Army were also killed in the firefight, while three other U.S. citizens and one Afghan were wounded, police spokesman Wali Mohammad said on Sunday.

"We appreciate the sacrifice of our fallen heroes, every death is tragic and important - none more than any other," ISAF said in a statement after Saturday's attack.

Facebook is all about sharing, whether it?s through comments, posts, links, videos, photos, or even game requests. Now users have something new to share, Facebook Gifts, which allows users to send and receive real presents with just a few clicks.

According to?Facebook?s announcement?Thursday afternoon, users can first choose a gift and attach a digital card to send to their friend through Facebook. The gift can post on their friend?s timeline or in a private message. The friend will then get to virtually unwrap the gift (and even make changes of equal value) before accepting it. The sender can choose to pay Facebook immediately, or wait until the friend accepts the gift and enters in the shipping information. The physical present arrives later in the mail.

Facebook partnered with various vendors and will continue to gradually add more. Pictures on the Facebook announcement show that the company already partnered with Starbucks and several bakeries. Other?pictures?show Angry Birds and Star Wars plushies as possible gifts.

?Facebook didn?t say in its release how the revenue from goods gets split between it and its partners, but its built-in audience of 945 million users is already a draw for many companies,? reports the Washington Post.

The Post also says that in order for Facebook Gifts to work, users will need to trust Facebook more than ever by willingly entering in addresses, phone numbers, and credit card numbers.

Considering Facebook?s prior history with privacy concerns, this may cause an issue.

In a report from Computer World, some security experts are concerned about the security and privacy implications of this new Facebook program.?Bogdan Botezatu, a senior cyber-threat analyst at antivirus vendor Bitdefender, said the amount of private information publicly shared on Facebook ?already exceeds all security precautions.?

Facebook users constantly update their statuses with information revealing where they are (now shown on a map with the feature, ?check in?), who they?re with, what they?re eating or wearing, and generally every detail about their daily adventures. Facebook critics say this is a big opening for stalkers.

"The new information that might be shared by users is particularly dangerous in the case of account compromise," says Botezatu in the Computer World article.

Home addresses combined with other information commonly shared could make it very easy for burglars to select potential victims and plan raids, he says.

Adam Levin, chairman and founder of Identity Theft 911, says users would be more open to sharing their birthdays, reported the Computer World article.

?Anytime you provide information to complete the mosaic of your life, you're putting yourself in harm's way,? says Levin in the article.?

Earning their first shutout of a Pac-12 opponent since 2003, Oregon?s defense led the way for a change in the Ducks 49-0 win over Arizona last Saturday.

The Ducks forced five turnovers, including two interceptions returned for scores and shutout a Wildcat offense that was averaging 46 points per game. Oregon also stuffed all four of Arizona's fourth down attempts.?

Quarterback Marcus Mariota threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns, including a 55-yard strike to freshman receiver Bralon Addison.

No. 2 Oregon?s Heisman candidate, sophomore running back De?Anthony Thomas, had his lowest output of the season with 12 rushes for 48 yards, but did set up a touchdown drive with a 38-yard punt return in the third quarter. That drive lasted three plays and 29 seconds and put the Ducks up 21-0 in the third quarter.

Washington State is still searching for the first Pac-12 victory after surrendering three touchdowns in the final seven minutes to Colorado in their 35-34 loss.

Cougars' sophomore quarterback Connor Halliday threw for 401 yards going 32-for-60 with four touchdowns and two picks, and put Washington State up 28-14 with a 49-yard score to junior receiver Marquess Wilson with 5:27 left in the third quarter.

Colorado then held the Cougars to two field goals in the fourth quarter, and quarterback Jordan Webb completed a 70-yard touchdown pass to receiver Nick Kasa and ran four yards for a score and the win with nine seconds left in the game.

Washington State freshman receiver Gabe Marks had seven catches for 107 yards and a touchdown, and Wilson finished with five receptions for 99 yards and two scores.

The Cougars currently have the nation?s 18th best passing offense, averaging 313.8 yards, but Oregon has only allowed 300 yards passing in one game this season, and even held Fresno State to 62 yards in the air.

Tamer job gains expected for Canada in September

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada is likely to have added a modest 10,000 new jobs in September, backpedaling from gains in August that far surpassed market expectations and better reflecting the sluggish pace of the country's economic growth.

The gain of 10,000 jobs was the median forecast in a Reuters poll of 23 economists. The most bullish forecast was for 28,000 new jobs and the most bearish was for a loss of 15,000 jobs.

In August, Canada added 34,300 jobs - more than doubling expectations and recouping all the 30,400 positions lost in July - but analysts see slower and steadier jobs growth as more in line with economic fundamentals.

"If we look at the last six months, even the six-month average, which is about 27,000, that looks high for an economy that's growing at less than 2 percent," said Avery Shenfeld, chief economist at CIBC, who expects 10,000 new jobs.

"So we're due for a somewhat slower pace."

The poll's median forecast for the unemployment rate in September was 7.3 percent, unchanged from August and July.

Jobs growth was muted in May and June after a whopping 140,500 new jobs were created in March and April, which was the biggest two-month spree of job creation in more than 30 years.

"We expect a see-saw performance from the labor market in September as another strong gain in jobs (like that in August) is not likely given the current economic environment," IHS Global Insight Canadian economists Arlene Kish and Jillian Kohut wrote in a research note.

They forecast a loss of 15,000 jobs, but added: "There is the potential for a gain given that consumer confidence levels increased in September, but we haven't always seen survey responses reflected in actual data outcomes."

Canada has regained all the jobs it lost during the last recession, which was milder in Canada than it was in the United States.

How Campaign Ads Are Affecting This Undecided Voter

A small sliver of the voters will determine the outcome of a tight presidential race. Yahoo! News asked a handful of undecided voters to keep a running diary: What news stories and events are coloring their choices?

COMMENTARY | Political campaigns can be run with integrity or without shame, and this year it seems both candidates want to run campaigns that are as shameless as can be. The most egregious offenses are occurring not in stump speeches and campaign stops, but in the relentless campaign commercials we are all undoubtedly forced to watch. Here, in Wisconsin, both campaigns have launched nasty attack ads against one another.

An ad from the Romney campaign attacks President Obama for his alleged mishandling of trade agreements with China, as well as his failure to label China a "currency manipulator." The ad then goes on to say that, "We cannot afford four more years." While the ad may have some truth to it, the fact is that candidate Romney failed to mention anything he would do different.

The Obama campaign hasn't had any more integrity, and the president even admitted as much - saying the campaign sometimes goes overboard. In response to the Romney campaign attacks, Obama for America released an ad that goes after Romney for offshoring jobs to China while head of Bain Capital, and even knocks Romney for having money invested there. Again, the campaign fails to address the initial attacks, and also offers no new course of action to deal with what is a very real problem.

To this 24-year-old blue-collar worker, both campaigns are failing when it comes to effective messaging. I want to know what is going to be done after the election to fix this country's woes. We need a real plan to deal with trade imbalance, not attack ads and shaming. At this point, it seems neither has a cohesive plan to address this issue, or really any others. All we are being told is that we need to trust them, and once the election is over they will fix everything. The lack of real information on their plans for the future is a bit disconcerting to me, and it should be to all voters.

According to prosecutors, the six researchers and the Department of Civil Protection?downplayed the likelihood?that a series of tremors that hit the city in early 2009 were foreshadowing a larger quake. On April 6, 2009, a magnitude-6.3 earthquake killed 309 city residents.

The trial, which began about a year ago, has worried scientists, who point out that?earthquake prediction is not possible. But prosecutors insist that the trial is not about predicting the unpredictable, according to?Nature News. During closing arguments on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 24-25), the prosecution assistant told the courtroom that instead, the scientists and officials had inadequately assessed the risk of a quake and given deceptive information to the public. The prosecution is asking for four-year prison terms for the accused.

Earthquake swarms are notoriously unreliable predictors of future quakes, say seismologists. In 1988, researchers found that about half of large quakes in seismically active areas of Italy were preceded by foreshocks, but only 2 percent of small earthquake clusters predicted a big temblor.

At the controversial March 31 meeting in L'Aquila, earth scientist Enzo Boschi, now a defendant in the case, acknowledged the uncertainty, calling a large earthquake "unlikely," but saying that the possibility could not be excluded. In a post-meeting press conference, however, Department of Civil Protection official Bernardo De Bernardinis, also a defendant, told citizens there was "no danger."

Prosecutors have portrayed De Barnardinis as a victim of bad information from the team of seismologists, reported Nature News.

The trial is on hold until Oct. 9, when the defense will present its closing arguments.

As a writer, you could say that Jonathan Ames has certainly explored the boundaries of what?s possible through a myriad of mediums and life experiences. He?s written novels, memoirs and comics, worked as a newspaper columnist, an on-stage storyteller and was the creator, writer and producer of ?Bored to Death? the TV series which ran for three seasons on HBO. He?s also been an occasional actor (he was a ?porn-extra? in one film) and had a brief career as an amateur boxer known as ?The Herring Wonder.?

Often confessional, frequently provocative and largely experiential, Ames built a reputation for putting it all out there in his writing ? whether he was sharing stories of his childhood traumas or sexual misadventures. On Wednesday, October 3 Ames will be the first guest in the fall Writers Speak Wednesdays series at Stony Brook Southampton.

Given all his successes, Ames is now in a well-earned position to offer aspiring young writers a bit of guidance in pursuing their own careers. But Ames will tell you, it was another talented (and extremely confessional) writer who inspired him when he was just starting out ? Spalding Gray, the renowned monologist and Sag Harbor resident who took his own life in 2004 following a car accident that left him with debilitating injuries.

?I first saw him in ?86 at Lincoln Center,? recalls Ames. ?A woman I was dating took me to the show, and I remember loving it. Even though it was Lincoln Center there was something Beat Generation about it. For me anyway.?

?I was 22 years old and here?s someone going up there being so vulnerable and honest and real while performing,? adds Ames. ?A few years later, I don?t know if I forgot about it, but I began to tell stories.?

By that point, though Ames had published his first novel, ?I Pass Like the Night,? he was struggling with his new writing projects. So he went to MacDowell Colony, an artists and writers retreat in New Hampshire, where he had received a residency. Coincidentally, Spalding Gray had also once had a MacDowell residency (he shared details of the writer?s block he experienced there in his monologue ?Monster in a Box?). And like Gray, Ames found he was also having trouble getting his words down on paper during his time at MacDowell.

?But when I was talking at the dinner table they?d all laugh,? recalls Ames of the other artists and writers at MacDowell. ?Same things at the support groups, I?d tell my stories and they laughed.?

?One night I ended up telling stories at the library in the colony,? he adds. ?I don?t know if I had Spalding in my mind, but he was in my conscious.?

That was 1990, and in the years that followed, Ames began to go on stage to tell very personal stories from his life. But these were not like stand-up comedy routines or theatrical one-person shows that involve a lot of movement on stage.

?I kind of did what Spalding did with the desk and the glass of water ? stripped down and talking at a mic,? explains Ames. ?Then in ?99, I met him socially at a party and was very shy, a little like a baseball fan seeing Joe DiMaggio or Derek Jeter. I asked if his technique was like mine, where he knew the basic outline, but used improv so he told it fresh every time. He said he did.?

In 1999, Ames received a Guggenheim fellowship and brought his original (and some would say shocking) one-man show ?Oedipussy? to an off-off-Broadway theater. And by the time of Gray?s death, Ames had become known as a downtown Manhattan performer and he knew a lot of the same people as Gray. So when Gray?s widow, Kathie Russo, and Lucy Sexton put together the theatrical piece ?Spalding Gray: Stories Left to Tell,? which consisted of excerpts from Gray?s monologues and writings, they tapped Ames as one of the initial five performers to share Gray?s words on stage.

?After a few experimental performances in small theaters I was in the PS 122 run,? says Ames. ?We did five nights in a row, then I went on the road with them to a couple different cities and theaters.?

While Ames would not say his own method of baring his soul on stage was directly because of Gray, he does call him ?a kindred spirit.? And though he performed his on stage pieces while still working on his books, Ames did not find that one form of writing segued into the other.

?It was a dual track ? I?d write during the day, perform at night,? he says. ?The performance was more ephemeral, more of the moment. Later I had a column in an alternative paper for three years. A lot of the stories I told on stage I turned into prose for my column. My column was my adventures.?

?For me, performing grew out of struggle to write a second book ? but I found I could just talk,? he says. ?That led me back to writing. It was this bifurcated life. I was better known as a writer than a performer. In the downtown world I was known as both.?

Now that he?s older (Ames is 48), finds his focus has changed and he admits he is less eager to share the nitty gritty details of his personal life with his public. In the HBO series ?Bored to Death,? actor Jason Schwartzman may have played a struggling novelist named Jonathan Ames who moonlights as an unlicensed private detective, but the show, which ran from 2009 to 2011, was wholly fictional ? not confessional.

?I?ve written four novels and four collections,? he says. ?I haven?t really been doing the confessional work for quite some time. As I get older it becomes more difficult because I think I want to be more private and don?t want people reading into things as much.?

?It?s an issue I?m struggling more with now than when I was young and more courageous on some level,? says Ames. ?When you?re trying to make your way, you do that by being brave. Maybe I?ve gotten less brave.?

It?s not just true of the writing. Ames, a.k.a. ?The Herring Wonder? who once enjoyed going a few rounds in the ring, whether in the school yard, as performance art spectacle or a serious amateur bout, has also hung up the boxing gloves. His nose has been broken more times than he cares to remember.

?I haven?t had a fight since 2007. I don?t think I?ll box again,? he says. ?I enjoyed the romance of getting into the ring, but not getting hit or hurting someone else. I was more into putting on the costume.?

Inside the mind of a new professor | The Quinnipiac Chronicle

Jason Koo is an assistant professor of English, who was hired this semester. He teaches creative writing, and has written two poetry books, ?Man on Extremely Small Island? and ?America?s Favorite Poem.? Here are some snippets of our conversation.

Let?s start with a brief introduction of yourself.

I was hired as an assistant professor of English specifically to teach creative writing. My particular specialty in creative writing is poetry. They are starting a new creative writing concentration here, [and] they have a fiction professor already, so they hired me to kind of fill out the concentration and develop it over the next few years, which I am excited about.

How does being a professor affect your poetry, and does this job make it harder?

Well, I would say yes and no. I would say teaching in college, being a full-time professor, is really good for a poet, any creative writer really, but especially a poet, because you have a lot of time to yourself that you wouldn?t otherwise have if you had to work an everyday job all year round. The summer especially is a good time for me to write.

So it?s easy to assume your writing was driven by a passion for literature and poetry. What inspired you to become a professor?

I went to my Master in Fine Arts program, the first step to becoming a poet, which is a really weird thing when you?re that young, because all you really have is the passion as you mentioned, and you feel like you want to do this thing, but you really have no practical idea of how you?re going to make it possible. So, you end up going to graduate school because you know it makes the most sense.

I think I matured and I started to realize that, you know, teaching is a great job to have, because you get paid to talk about what you?re passionate about. And I still think that my identity as a poet, or even my style as a poet, is sort of similar to my teaching persona. My poetry is very conversational; it?s very voiced. It uses a lot of humor, but is also serious, and I think I take the same kind of stylistic approach in my teaching.

What were you doing before you came here?

I was teaching at the Lehman College in the city at the University of New York. It?s in the Bronx. I was doing that for three years, and I was also directing the graduate program. I was actually getting a lot of curricular building experience and administrative experience which I think helped me get this job because that?s another thing that I?m doing here.

How are you feeling about your classes so far and the students here?

I?m feeling really good. What I really appreciate about Quinnipiac is that the students are always more prepared. [Here] the students have been very bright. I?ve been impressed with their writing and the quality of their discussions. It?s been low-stress in that way.

Anything you want to say to the Quinnipiac community?

I?ll just reiterate how grateful I am that I?m here, that I was offered this job. I feel like the students are really bright, and it?s a great time to be here. The whole school I think is gaining an identity, and it?s kind of discovering what it is and what it?s going to be. Especially for my specific field it?s exciting because creative writing is growing and I just feel like in five years this place in some ways is going to look totally different.

WHY IT MATTERS: Debt

The issue:

A sea of red ink is confronting the nation and presidents to come.

The budget deficit ? the shortfall created when the government spends more in a given year than it collects in taxes and fees? is on track to top $1 trillion for the fourth straight year. When there's not enough to pay current bills, the government borrows, mostly by selling interest-bearing Treasury bonds, bills and notes to investors and governments worldwide. It now borrows about 40 cents of every dollar it spends.

The national debt refers to the total amount the federal government owes; the deficit is just a one-year slice.

The U.S. has been borrowing since the 1700s, when it needed money to finance the American Revolution. The outstanding debt has since risen to a shade over $16 trillion. While there's plenty of finger-pointing by politicians over who's to blame, deficits historically surge during wars and deep recessions, and the U.S. has had both over the past decade.

Where they stand:

President Barack Obama has proposed bringing deficits down by slowing spending gradually, to avoid suddenly tipping the economy back into recession. To help, he would raise taxes on households earning more than $250,000 annually and impose a surcharge of 30 percent on those making more than $1 million.

He acknowledges his spending on recession-fighting stimulus, tax relief and bailout programs ? much of it started under former President George W. Bush ? has contributed to the deficit. But so have bipartisan agreements to extend Bush-era tax cuts, and paying for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Also raising deficits: a drop in tax revenues as more people found themselves out of work and personal and corporate incomes that sagged in the deepest downturn since the Great Depression.

Republican candidate Mitt Romney would lower deficits mostly through deep spending cuts, including some of the reductions proposed by his conservative running mate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, chairman of the House Budget Committee. But many of the cuts they're pushing would be partially negated by their proposals to lower top tax rates on both corporations and individuals.

Why it matters:

Deficits and debt are important because it's never good to spend more than you make for too long. The party out of power always makes deficits a big issue against the one holding the White House ? as Democrats did in 2008 and Republicans are doing now.

Leaders of both parties agree the burden will become unsustainable if borrowing is not reined in while interest obligations keep rising. But huge policy differences exist over how to balance the budget or at least trim deficits to manageable levels ? whether through spending cuts, tax increases or a mix.

Obama and Democrats tend to favor a combination, while Republicans mostly want just spending cuts, although Romney and Ryan say they'd also end some tax deductions and close loopholes ? without specifying which ones.

Congress sets a ceiling on how much the government can borrow. If this debt limit is breached, the government will default on its obligations. This has never happened, but it almost did last summer in a Capitol Hill standoff. As a consequence, the nation's credit rating was downgraded for the first time ever.

The current $16.4 trillion debt limit will be reached late this year or early next. A slew of tax breaks will expire at the same time.

No matter who wins, he'll immediately have his hands full.

N. Korea blasts US plan for new radar base in Japan

North Korea on Thursday lashed out at a US plan to build a new radar base in Japan, saying it would escalate an arms race and leave Pyongyang no option but to develop "more powerful nuclear weapons".

During a visit to Tokyo on Monday, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said an agreement had been reached on deploying another US missile defence radar in Japan.

The radar will enhance the ability of US troops to defend Japan and protect the United States from North Korea's ballistic missile threat, Panetta said.

"This will only strain the regional situation and escalate the arms race," the North's foreign ministry said in a statement published by the official Korean Central News Agency.

"What should not be overlooked is that Panetta openly declared the new radar is targeted against the DPRK (North Korea), not China," it said.

According to US officials, the additional radar frees up the country's naval Aegis ships, which have been operating near Japan to help detect any potential incoming missiles.

"Given the fact that the US, the world's biggest possessor of nukes and missiles, is stepping up its arms build-up against the DPRK, it is quite natural for (North Korea) to steadily bolster up its nuclear deterrent," the North's foreign ministry said.

"The US attitude requires the DPRK to become a more powerful nuclear weapons state as befitting the 'rival' of the US," it added.

About 47,000 US troops are stationed in Japan, many of them on the far southern island chain of Okinawa. Japan already has one X-band radar, at Shariki base in Tsugaru City, in the far north of the main island of Honshu.

North Korea carried out a failed rocket launch in April in what it said was an attempt to put a satellite into orbit.

But the UN Security Council strongly condemned the exercise as breaching a ban on the testing of ballistic missile technology, and tightened sanctions.

Researchers calculated that a rapid temperature change of just 100 degrees Fahrenheit could fracture the new glass?compared to 330 degrees for the old stuff. They say that means it's possible to break a glass measuring cup with boiling water. Or to explode a cool casserole dish by sliding it into a hot oven.

Manufacturers say they temper the new glass to make it stronger. And researchers did find some evidence of that. But they believe that the heat treatment was inadequate. Because in lab tests, the cookware exploded into large glass shards, rather than tiny pieces, as tempered auto glass does.

As the saying goes, if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. If this research is accurate, the heat is on this cookware.
